Patlabor Artbooks Information

The following artbook information was compiled by Katherine Lu. If anyone has information on other books, please let me know. Thanks!

The Mobile Police Patlabor: Pulsation (ISBN4-8291-9106-6)

The Mobile Police Patlabor: Air (ISBN4-8291-9113-9)

Two Dragon Magazine specials, artbooks by Akemi Takada (the
character designer for the Patlabor anime). Mostly in color,
they're collections of character illustrations spanning the entire
anime series -- original OAVs, first movie, TV series and P-series
OAVs, and the second movie. Some of the drawings are collected
here after originally appearing elsewhere (magazines, CD booklets,
    etc.).

This Is Animation The Select: Patlabor 2 the Movie (ISBN4-09-101519-0)

This book, if the title doesn't give it away :), mostly covers the
second movie. It includes a film story, brief sections on the
background art and battle scenes, character and mecha designs
(black & white line drawings), and interviews w/ some of the
movie staff. At the back, there is a small section of color
illustrations used for the manga covers and for the second OAV
'package illustrations' (videos?). Much of the book is in color.

This Is Animation: Patlabor the Movie & OVA (ISBN-4-09-101577-8)

This is a thick (258pp) book which contains mostly character and
mecha designs (B&W line drawings) for the first movie and then for
the first OAV series. There is also a brief film story (in color) for
the first movie, background art designs (including "blueprints" and
sketches of the SV2 headquarters), location photos (the basis for
some of the places depicted in the first movie), and an interview
w/ Oshii Mamoru (the director for both Patlabor movies).

Patlabor: Shounen Sunday Graphic Special (ISBN4-09-101177-2)

This a thin book/magazine put out by the publisher of the Patlabor
manga. It contains a lot of random things: scenes from the first
OAVs, a few character sketches (both comic and animated
versions), some mecha and art designs, color illustrations by
Masami Yuuki (the Patlabor manga-ka) and interviews w/ a lo t of
people (Hiroko Kasahara, Masami Yuuki, Rumiko Takahashi, etc.).

Saigo Shutsudou: Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor After TV (ISBN4-19-669654-6)

A small, thin book (about 6" x 4"), all in color, w/ scenes from
several of the later P-series OAVs -- including the "Bathlabor",
CLAT, and onsen (Kanuka vs. Kumagami) eps.

Mobile Police Patlabor Perfect Manual vol. 1 (ISBN4-89189-356-7)
Mobile Police Patlabor Perfect Manual vol. 2 (ISBN4-89189-359-1)
Mobile Police Patlabor Perfect Manual vol. 3 (ISBN4-89189-039-8)

These 3 are B-Club Film Comics put out by Bandai. The first
volume covers first OAVs 1-3, the second covers first OAVs 4-6,
and the third volume deals w/ the first movie and the 7th volume
of the first OAV series. Each includes film stories (partly color,
partly B&W) and mecha and character designs (w/ some overlap w/
the This Is Animation: Patlabor the Movie & OVA book), and a few
pictures of plastic models of labors (mostly of the AV-98 Ingram).
Vol. 2 also includes pictures of Hiroko Kasahara (the singer for a
couple of the Patlabor OPs) dressed up in an SV2 (winter) uniform. :)

Patlabor 2 the Movie [color manga by Shounen Sunday] (ISBN4-09-121874-1)

The second movie in comic format (in color).

There are several other books for Patlabor (and I'm sure there are
prob'ly even more! ;), but since I don't own them, I can't say much
about them except for what I've been told by other people:
Patlabor Live: by Newtype, mostly illustrations of Noa
Patlabor: Labor in Action: pictures of Patlabor models
Patlabor 2 Methods: design sketches and story boards for the
second movie, mostly in 2-tone (something like purple and black?
red and black?)
This Is Animation: Patlabor 2 the Movie: mostly B&W line drawings,
a thick book like the other This Is Animation book
Patlabor: The New World of Masami Yuuki: published when the first
movie came out, pictures of Noa before she joins SV2, guide to the
first movie; interviews w/ Miina Tominaga (Noa's seiyuu), Yutaka
Izubuchi (mecha designer), and others.
